2021 was a key year for electric cars around the world. Sales grew fast and electric vehicles joined everyday life. The world faced climate change and sought green choices. Car sales changed as people picked cleaner rides.

Unprecedented Sales Growth

Data shows about 6.75 million electric cars sold in 2021. That number is 108% higher than in 2020. The entire auto market grew only by 4.7% during the same time. Electric cars made up 8.3% of light vehicle sales, up from 4.2% before.

Battery electric vehicles made up about 71% of sales. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles filled the other 29%. This split shows a strong lean toward fully electric models. Better battery work helped cut costs.

Regional Highlights

Europe: Close Runner-Up

Europe sold near 2.3 million electric cars, a 66% rise from 2020. Countries like Germany, the United Kingdom, and France played key parts in this growth. Seven of the top ten national electric car markets are in Europe. Strict car rules and more charging stations helped sales.

United States: Rising Adoption

US sales reached 667,731 electric vehicles, a 103% jump from the previous year. Though the market share is still small, buyer interest grows fast. New state rules and car maker plans add more ride models.
